Home secretary and minister for women and equality Theresa May has outlined the benefits workers, such as those using serviced offices in Edinburgh, can expect from the new Equality Act, 90 per cent of which came into force last week.
Bringing together nine different laws into one piece of legislation, the regulations will simplify the law for businesses in addition to reducing their administrative burden.
Ms May said a company that reflects the society it serves is better for the employer, the employee and the customer.
Females should not receive different treatment in their job and a move towards transparency will help to eradicate aspects of inequality in the workplace - such as unequal pay - she stated.
"Gagging clauses that stop people discussing their pay with their colleagues will be unenforceable, allowing women - and men - to find out if they're being paid unfairly," Ms May observed.
Last week, Michelle Morgan of Brethertons noted companies should not need to make any major changes to policy as a result of the Act, but will be forced to review procedures in order to ensure they comply with the new rules.
