Firms in serviced offices might wish to heed the advice that employees who work on a high level of energy most of the time eventually lose motivation.
Dr Jochen Menges termed this phenomenon an "acceleration trap", which he said occurs when organisations expect their staff to exhibit increased effort every day.
Eventually, this will take its toll on the firm and lead to "organisational burnout" and deteriorations in staff performance, he continued.
"What happens to companies is that their energy really declines. The frenetic pace that they put forward saps the employee's motivation," Dr Menges said.
Sometimes businesses need to take breaks and slow down in order to accumulate energy for periods of high intensity, he advised.
And firms in serviced offices might want to act on these recommendations if they wish to improve the productivity of their staff.
Dr Menges was speaking during a new radio documentary podcast by Cambridge Judge Business School, where academics discuss strategies managers can use to overcome the current economical problems they face.
