Businesses such as those that rent serviced offices in Hemel Hempstead may be able to boost their profits by using social media.
However, Andrew Girdwood, head of strategy for Bigmouthmedia, said that a lack of understanding concerning social media may result in companies failing to utilise the advantages it can offer them.
"Some brands are very switched on and pioneering and you could not accuse them of being dumb about social media," he observed, before claiming that other firms employ a cautious attitude towards sites such as Twitter and Facebook.
"Social media happens to businesses whether they like it or not," Mr Girdwood stated.
He feels the problem for some companies is that there is a lack of understanding of social media from a number of agencies that offer a traditional marketing service.
This has led to brands using alternative sources such as boutique agencies for help.
Research by Daryl Wilcox Publishing earlier this month showed that more than half of the companies surveyed used social media, with LinkedIn proving to be the most popular social media website.
