It is essential that small firms, such as those that use serviced offices in Northampton, have access to finance options so they can expand and grow as they will play an important role in helping to restore the economy.
That is the view of business minister Mark Prisk, who announced the government wants to help companies that may have previously gone to their banks for money.
"We want to work with businesses to find the best solutions for increasing finance to small firms," said Mr Prisk.
He was speaking after what he described as an "informative and useful" meeting to discuss the response to alternative means of funding rather than traditional bank lending.
One possible option that emerged is supply chain finance, which is a choice Mr Prisk believes should be considered by all large corporates.
The statement comes after the Federation of Small Businesses urged the government to generate more funding for small companies by encouraging competition between the banks.
