Companies operating out of serviced offices in Northampton may have noticed a move away from staff seeking shorter hours.
Phil Flaxton, chief executive officer of Work Wise UK, explained that many employees seem less concerned with achieving a positive work-life balance.
He described how the economic situation "probably has had an impact" on this idea with it being relegated to the backburner as individuals worry about the stability of their careers.
"Before the recession there was certainly an increasing uptake of the issues around work-life balance ... I'm not sure that is as relevant today," Mr Flaxton stated.
It was suggested that although some individuals, particularly those with children, would like to worker shorter hours many organisations cannot afford to offer that option at this time.
The comments follow a recent warning by Adrienne Burgess, head of research at the Fatherhood Institute, who claimed that employers need to be flexible in order to retain the best staff.
