People working in serviced offices in London may want to consider hiring professionals to install security systems, after an expert criticised self-installation packages.
British Crime Reduction Centre (BCRC) spokesman Adrian Platts said some businesses could be inadequately protected.
He explained self-installed systems can be unreliable and basic and installers need a good amount of security experience and knowledge to use them effectively.
"It can be a costly and wasteful exercise," he concluded.
Instead, he recommends hiring professionals to implement business-grade systems.
Mr Platts previously described security systems for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as a "grudge purchase" and advised company owners to make sure they do not cut corners in security, which can prove counter-productive and cost money in the long term.
He called on companies to not under invest in measures necessary for protecting their business.
The BCRC is an initiative to help SMEs in the Yorkshire and Humber region, and is funded by the Yorkshire Regional Development Agency.
