Businesses, such as serviced offices in Northampton, may wish to follow the advice of one expert and monitor their energy consumption and waste to improve their green credentials.
Head of sustainability at Hammerson and chair of the British Council for Offices' environmental sustainability group Paul Edwards said monitoring a company's wastage results in discovering obvious energy efficiency and waste reduction measures.
Mr Edwards explained companies will notice the cost of things such as leaving lights or air conditioning units on if they do this, indicating where the biggest efficiency savings can be made.
"If you start to measure first, then you can understand what you are actually using," he concluded.
The Department of Energy and Climate Change has unveiled legislation that aims to ensure a 50 per cent cut in emissions by 2025, compared to 1990 levels.
Currently, non-domestic buildings are responsible for 17 per cent of all carbon emissions in the UK.
