Individuals working out of serviced offices in Edinburgh could be some of those who are said to find it annoying or difficult when colleagues take a long absence.
Research from Aviva UK Health polled 1,000 UK members of staff and found 23 per cent think being in a firm with people who take significant periods of sick leave is not enjoyable.
A total of ten per cent are concerned that this kind of absence could lead to the enterprise going out of business and result in others losing their jobs, while 69 per cent of employers stated this is a problem for their company.
Of those that were absent from work due to ill health, 71 per cent expressed concern about returning after a period of time away from the office.
"Both the emotional and financial strains on the absent employee and remaining team members can be huge" when workers take sick leave, head of group risk at Aviva UK Health Steve Bridger said.
This follows research from Bupa, which found unhealthy lifestyle choices cost British businesses a cumulative £3 billion annually.
