Smaller companies running out of serviced offices in Edinburgh may be some of the enterprises that should be sheltered from energy price rises.
This is according to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), which found that 81 per cent of less-sizable firms are worried about the increasing cost of power.
There is a chance that "introducing a mechanism to increase electricity prices generated by fossil fuels will further inflate prices for the smaller players, as generators pass on the extra costs to consumers and small firms", FSB national chairman John Walker said.
Suppliers must therefore not be allowed to raise bills further to support low carbon investments, the organisation argued.
It noted that the least sizable corporations are similar power consumers to domestic users and safeguards should therefore be put in place to ensure that carbon pricing treats the two sectors similarly.
This follows a statement from the Confederation of British Industry that the government should introduce legislation to make carbon reporting mandatory for all UK businesses.
