Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating out of serviced offices in Edinburgh may be struggling to implement sustainable practices, following one expert's comments.
Professor Ross King, joint programme director at the Centre for Sustainable Environmental Management - Brunel Management Programme (CSEM – BMP), explained how small companies appear to find it harder to focus on such issues.
He explained that the top 300 businesses in the private sector appear to be better organised than other SMEs and this may be due to funding.
"Certainly, when you get down to the SMEs, they really do struggle. Some of these people are run off their feet just trying to keep their business alive," Mr King stated.
It was suggested that a vast number of these types of companies do not feel they have the time to engage in initiatives that are not directly related to keeping their business afloat.
Mr King's comments follow a recent report that suggests a larger percentage of organisations in the public sector are "leaders" in their attitudes to sustainability compared with private enterprises.
