Employee engagement for people working in serviced offices in Cardiff and other workers is an important driver and is necessary for employers to understand what staff connect with, a report commissioned by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has concluded.
Researchers noticed different people engage with their work in different ways that vary over time, with interest changing in intensity and depth and higher engagement resulting in better performance. The area of each individual's interest - known as the locus of engagement - was highlighted as the important area for managers to focus on.
"Engagement is not static," Angela Baron, CIPD engagement and organisational development adviser, said. "This research is an important first step in understanding how to engage and energise employees."
Titled Locus of engagement: Understanding what employees connect with at work, the study was produced by the Kingston Engagement Consortium.
The CIPD is Europe's biggest human resources body, with over 135,000 members.
