Staff at serviced offices in Cardiff may be among the 22.8 per cent of workers who have claimed they are unhappy in their job.
New research by recruitment consultant Badenoch & Clark tracked employee happiness since 2007 and found in comparison to the previous 12 months contentment levels have fallen considerably.
Of those questioned, a third expressed ambivalence towards their job, while 27 per cent said they would not recommend their current employer.
For one in ten, the main motivation for going to the office was concern over spiralling debt and 21.9 per cent listed routine as their incentive.
Heidi Waddington, associate director at Badenoch & Clark said: "The relative decline of happiness in the workplace … can be attributed to a number of factors: the VAT rise, the rise in inflation and the recession."
Recent research by the Hay Group revealed that the median salary increase predicted for many workers in 2011 will be below the rate of inflation.
