Businesses using serviced offices in Cardiff could want to follow the suggestion of one NatWest employee and take advantage of word-of-mouth marketing, as it is the cheapest way to spread word about the services they offer.
Peter Ibbetson, chairman of small business at the bank, said businesses should ask satisfied customers to refer other potential clients to them.
"If you've done a good job, I promise you that if you've got one of your customers saying to somebody they deal with, 'These people are good', you will start to win business," he explained.
He also stated that social media is growing in use, but it is important firms remain focused on existing clients.
Small and medium-sized enterprises are most likely to utilise print advertisements as their marketing tool, a recent survey by Capital One found, with 62 per cent investing in this. Online ads are used by 34 per cent, and 14 per cent advertise on Facebook or Twitter.
Traditional networking is employed as a marketing tool by 51 per cent of businesses polled.
