The record label Ministry of Sound is reported to have sent letters to thousands of web users it believes have illegally downloaded music, reports the Guardian.
According to the newspaper, it stated it plans to take internet users to court and extract substantial damages unless compensation of around £350 is paid immediately.
Dr Damian Tambini, member of the Communications Consumer Panel and senior lecturer at the London School of Economics and Political Science, suggested there were "continuing concerns" surrounding open Wi-Fi under the Digital Economy Act.
Speaking at the Westminster eForum keynote seminar: Filesharing, copyright and the digital consumer, he said: "This is an area where there could be considerable consumer detriment over the next 12 months."
