Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), such as those using serviced offices in Northampton, may have seen an increase in their turnover since 2008.
Statistics published by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills showed there has been an £88 billion (5.8 per cent) rise in the turnover generated by such companies over the past two years, up to a total of £1,589 billion.
At the start of 2009 there were an estimated 4.8 million private sector firms in the UK, which represents a 1.1 per cent climb in number compared to the start of 2008.
Approximately 22.8 million people are employed by businesses in the sector, with SMEs accounting for three-fifths of all private sector jobs and half of the money generated by this division.
Earlier this week, national chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses John Walker said a nationwide mentoring scheme could benefit small firms by providing them with an adviser who has experience of running a similar-sized company in a successful manner.
