Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), such as those using serviced offices in Northampton, will be the major force behind employment in the UK, research has found.
According to the study by Experian, ten per cent of small companies in the UK will create a large number of work opportunities over the coming years.
Charlotte Hogg, managing director of the company, said: "All eyes are on private sector SMEs to drive growth, but encouraging them to take the risks associated with growth at a time when they are focussing on survival will be a challenge."
She noted that the test for the coalition will be to support those firms that are likely to recruit a high number of individuals, while continuing to help the rest of the businesses that will provide the foundation of the UK economy.
Earlier this week, managing director of Venture Finance Peter Ewen observed that financial institutions could be lending money to SMEs in innovative ways in order to help them come through the "unprecedented challenges" they currently face.
