Staff working in serviced offices in Edinburgh may be among the 17 per cent of people who have taken a sick day after the Christmas party.
A survey by Aviva UK Health revealed that nearly one in five employees have pretended to be ill so they do not have to face work after over-indulging.
In addition, a third of individuals said they spent the day after the festive celebrations feeling too tired or hungover to function.
The research also highlighted the importance of getting enough sleep in order to allow time to sober up before heading back into the office.
Dr Doug Wright, head of clinical development at Aviva UK Health, said: "It's a good rule of thumb to work backwards from your planned start time - one hour per unit drunk to be processed through your system."
Elsewhere, a recent study by Travelodge found that on average employees will spend three hours and five minutes staring into space due to a post-party hangover.
