Proximity to workplaces, such as serviced offices in Northampton, is one of the most important factors for British people looking to move home, new research has discovered.
The poll, from Santander Mortgages, revealed that the average Briton would be willing to pay an extra £5,354 for a property that was closer to their business centre.
A total of 33 per cent of respondents claimed that this was the most fundamental issue when choosing a place to live, higher than the amount of people who view a dwelling having more space (29 per cent) and better transport links (21 per cent) than their current home as key.
Phil Cliff, director of the company, noted that places providing the "most in-demand privileges" have an "expensive price tag".
Only 28 per cent of women called the distance from their job the main priority, compared to 38 per cent of men.
This research contrasts with the comments of Matt Duffy, partnership management for consultant Lorica, who noted that flexible working is increasingly in demand, which may lessen the need for people to live close to their office.
