Businesses operating out of offices to rent in Edinburgh may be interested to hear that new data has revealed the recent downturn affected the service and manufacturing sectors differently.
The Office for National Statistics' (ONS') Economic & Labour Review shows that there was a variation in performance between small and large firms in each division.
Less sizeable companies were hit the hardest in the service sector, while in the manufacturing sector large organisations suffered the most.
ONS statistician Tullio Buccellato said: "The difference between larger and smaller firms in the service sector may reflect different patterns of activity."
It was suggested that more compact businesses are often focused on specialist services and can therefore suffer as demand falls.
Meanwhile, bigger companies are often more diverse and have a country-wide market.
The ONS is the executive office of the UK Statistics Authority, a non-ministerial department that reports to Parliament and provides data from which policy is decided.
