Offices to rent in Edinburgh news: Pensions confusion 'must be resolved'30th June 2011

Employees working in serviced offices in Edinburgh may be among the 30,000 Scottish public sector personnel striking over pensions today (June 30th), with the country's finance minister urging the UK government and unions to forge a constructive dialogue.

John Swinney said the reforms, which will see workers contributing more for their retirement funds, have come at a bad time for those struggling financially.

He remarked: "The Scottish government is committed to public sector pensions which are affordable, sustainable and fair."

Mr Swinney asked those opting for industrial action to seek a "positive resolution" to what he described as an "important issue".

The UK government should also consider scrapping its plans to increase contributions at a time of economic difficulty for many of the general public, he added.

Grahame Smith, the general secretary of the Scottish Trades Union Congress, was reported by the BBC as saying the move is an unacceptable "cash grab" to plug a deficit caused by "greedy bank bosses".
