Businesses working out of offices to rent in Edinburgh may be some of the enterprises that look for investment opportunities in the private sector following comments from UKFunders, a database of sources for commercial funding.
Spokesman Dr Stephen Bence noted plenty of these are available, but not from the "traditional sources" such as the government or banks.
He recommended that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) locate investment from places such as venture capital funds and business angels, where "substantial" money can be found.
Dr Bence also asserted that SMEs do not generally consider the potential of suffering bad debts and often neglect to perform credit checks on customers.
"The first time they lose money is a real wake-up call," he stated.
His comments follow data from the Institute of Credit Management, which found almost a quarter (24.7 per cent) of its members surveyed do not utilise the payment performance data that B2B credit reference reports provide.
This could heighten the chances of them encountering risks, the organisation concluded.
