Firms using offices to rent in Cardiff and all other businesses in the UK should be compelled to reveal the amount of carbon dioxide they produce.
This is the view of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), which has called on the government to introduce legislation to make emissions reporting mandatory.
It argued that enterprises would be better at monitoring the amount of pollution they create, resulting in more effective management of greenhouse gases.
"Mandatory carbon reporting is a great way of making boardrooms aware of the savings possible through energy efficiency," CBI director for business environment Rhian Kelly said.
However, she pointed out that there are already similar policies in place that force corporations to release this information, including the EU Emissions Trading Scheme and the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC).
"The government should get rid of overlapping regulations so firms don't end up getting bogged down reporting for a variety of different schemes," she concluded.
Recent simplifications to the CRC have been beneficial to industry, according to John Barwise, chair of the Cumbria Green Business Forum.
