Businesses, such as those using serviced offices in Edinburgh, should to be allowed to grow and need to be given support in the government's comprehensive spending review, it has been noted.
A spokesman for the Forum of Private Business (FPB) said while painful cuts are expected, it is vital there is a focus on taking steps that "free up" entrepreneurship.
He said the FPB wants "the tax system and red tape compliance to be streamlined in order to not only reduce the deficit, but [to] also remove the cost burdens on business growth".
The representative stated there are a number of reasons why confidence has fallen within the industry, including a lack of clarity and certainty concerning how much public sector support will be available for firms following the demise of Business Link.
According to the latest Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales/Grant Thornton UK Business Confidence Monitor, optimism within the business sector has fallen four points since the second quarter, down to 21.5 from 25.5.
