By investing in the mental health of its staff, companies - such as those occupying serviced offices in Edinburgh - could benefit by reducing the number of days lost to absence and sickness.
Carolyn Roberts, head of policy and campaigns at the Scottish Association for Mental Health, said it is a legal obligation for employers to ensure individuals working for them are not discriminated against.
She noted that the UK could save up to £1 million every day if more finance is put towards helping people suffering from mental wellbeing conditions.
With unemployment rising and fewer jobs available, people suffering from issues concerning their state of mind are facing an additional barrier to finding a job, she observed.
A report released by Mind Cymru earlier this week found that employers, including those in offices to rent, need to be more aware of mental health problems, as fewer than four in ten businesses said they would recruit someone with an associated illness.
