Employers – including those with staff in serviced offices in Northampton – could benefit by providing their workforce with transferable skills.
Mike Petrook, spokesman for the Chartered Management Institute, said while money is an important consideration for an individual, it is not the overriding factor in keeping them content within the workplace.
He added people want to be given the opportunity to ensure they are continually employable in the future.
"There was one piece of research that we did that said that 97 per cent … wanted to develop transferable skills," he stated.
According to Mr Petrook, people want to advance in areas that can help them in another role in a few years' time, as well as being able to continue in their current place of work.
A report published by PricewaterhouseCoopers last month found British businesses are losing approximately £42 billion a year as a result of their failure to retain talent to the same extent as other mature economies.
