Hosted VoIP solutions have been suggested as a possible way businesses operating out of serviced offices in Edinburgh could keep costs down.
Robert Douglas, president of technical services firm PlanetMagpie, explained that this latest trend in the technology can "take the hardware and in-house maintenance costs out of the equation".
He described how hosted services are beneficial for small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as they reduce the manpower and severs needed to support traditional VoIP options.
"Most small to mid-market companies realise that the VoIP environment requires additional hardware, communication line costs, software and phones," Mr Douglas noted.
As a result, it was suggested that many SMEs are moving towards using hosted VoIP services as an alternative to in-house choices.
The comments follow a recent study by research and consulting firm Frost & Sullivan which found the hosted internet protocol telephony market in Europe earned revenues of £0.8 billion in 2010.
