Businesses, such as those operating in serviced offices, may be wise to take steps now to avoid losing money, it has been suggested.
Hostway has announced companies can sign up for pre-registration for the .co domain with general availability for .co domain names starting on July 20th.
Findings from global market research firm Penn, Schon and Berland revealed more than 75 per cent of people associate .co with 'company', 'corporation', or other commercial endeavours.
Phil Turnbull, product manager for Hostway, suggested businesses should take time to register.
"[It] could be detrimental in terms of damaging the brand's integrity but also it could be much worse and they could have defamatory statements up there," he said.
He added that as well as being a good defensive move to avoid potentially losing business, firms should see it as an opportunity as .co has a strong association with commerce.
