Companies in serviced offices in Northampton could benefit by working alongside their landlords in order to make the workplace more sustainable.
Ian Fletcher, director of policy at the British Property Federation, said he believes a lack of communication between the two parties may be preventing the commercial property sector from finding energy-efficient solutions.
"Clearly it is one thing to be pursuing various initiatives, it is quite another to understand where your occupiers are coming from and seeking to support their efforts and their respects," he noted.
Issues such as a carbon reduction commitment have driven the two parties to engage in their own sustainability activities rather than working in partnership to deliver savings, which is something that needs to be addressed, Mr Fletcher observed.
Last week, Investment Property Databank UK Sustainable Property Index found that less energy-efficient properties have outperformed those that meet stringent sustainability criteria by 400 basis points, in terms of their return on investment since the first three months of 2008.
