The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has outlined four government policy areas where improvements can be made - which could benefit firms using serviced offices in Edinburgh - in a letter to the coalition.
It wrote to chancellor George Osborne and secretary for state for business, innovation and skills Vince Cable ahead of the publication of a white paper on building the economy.
In the document, CBI director-general Richard Lambert stated: "There is a need for a policy focus on those measures that can have the greatest impact on growth performance in a relatively short timeframe."
Areas where action is most urgently needed include supporting small and medium-sized enterprises through a number of approaches - such as extending the Enterprise Finance Guarantee - and increasing exports to expanding regions of the world, the body argued.
Prime minister David Cameron was recently praised by Mr Lambert, following a speech in which he showed a passion for business and emphasised the necessity of boosting the UK infrastructure.
