It is vital that the 24 Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) that have been given the go-ahead by the government genuinely involve businesses, such as those using serviced offices in Cardiff, it has been suggested.
Mike Cherry, policy chairman for the Federation of Small Businesses, said his organisation has supported the move for firms to work alongside local authorities.
The LEPs represent the next logical step in this process and the development of the scheme means those joint ventures that are ready to begin are not held back, he noted.
"If these partnerships are going to be successful then they must genuinely involve local businesses to get things done," he added.
Mr Cherry warned the projects should not "fall into the temptation of merely paying lip service to the small business sector".
Earlier this week, John Walker, national chairman of the body, argued for a Small Business Programme for Growth Initiative to be introduced by the coalition immediately, in order to allow firms the opportunity to help restore the country's economic health.
